Cold and Flu Care in Boynton Beach, Florida
Walk In Family Medicine Center
Washing your hands 10 times a day during flu season isn’t always enough to keep you well. Colds spread easily from person to person, and a person carrying the flu virus can spread it to others up to six feet away. When that person coughs, sneezes or even just talks, droplets carrying their virus can enter the air and reach you.
What Is the Difference Between a Cold and the Flu?
The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses caused by different viruses. Because they have similar symptoms, it can be hard to tell the difference between them without seeing a doctor. We perform special tests that usually must be done within the first few days after the illness sets in.
Detecting the Flu
In general, the flu is worse than the cold, with symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness and a dry cough. These symptoms can sometimes cause serious health problems like pneumonia and other infections.
Detecting a Cold
Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections or hospitalizations.
Who Is at Risk for the Flu?
When your children go to school or the park or when you go to work or the grocery store, you are at risk of getting and spreading the flu. Most adults with the flu can infect other people even before their own symptoms develop and for about a week after they become sick. Children can pass that virus on for even longer. Some people carry the virus and don’t ever manifest the symptoms. Those people can still pass the flu on to others.
The most effective way to protect your family and yourself from getting sick is with the flu vaccine. The typical flu vaccine protects against several different influenza viruses. A few seconds of pain can protect you from the serious health problems the flu can cause. We offer flu shots seven days a week. Don’t delay your protection — come in today.
